In the Pittman community of Henderson, Nevada, hope takes shape weekly on construction sites for Habitat for Humanity of Las Vegas (HFHLV). Volunteers from across the valley come together to build secure and affordable homes for families in need and help reframe Las Vegas communities one home at a time. Volunteers come from businesses and organizations all around town and change depending on scheduling and availability – all except for two: Jim and Jeff.
Jim and Jeff are the ever-present “Red Shirt Volunteers” for Habitat For Humanity Las Vegas. Their mandate is to help guide and direct volunteers on the construction site, but their impact goes so much further. These two dedicated and devoted Red Shirt Volunteers have built over twenty homes in Las Vegas over 10+ years and have become the glue that holds each build together. Their iconic red shirts serve as beacons of experience and leadership on the construction site, and both Jim and Jeff understand the impact of each home they build and work with an unwavering dedication to every home and every homeowner.
Jim speaks with heartfelt enthusiasm about the most rewarding aspect of volunteering. “It’s seeing the homeowners move in,” he shares. “We get to know them, and all the homeowners know each other. It improves the neighborhood.” Jim knows that the work he is doing isn’t just about houses; it’s about fostering communities built on shared dreams and a sense of belonging.
Jeff’s perspective adds another layer to their story of dedication. He mentions, “I do a variety of volunteer work, but to me, I’m fortunate that I can give back. I like to think that I’m helping out communities, society as a whole, by coming out and doing this.” His words resonate with the core principle of volunteerism – the power of individuals coming together to make a collective difference.
Jim and Jeff set the pace on the site and offer seasoned advice that helps ensure a better build and smooth operations for our volunteers. Their tireless work ethic inspires everyone around them, fostering a sense of camaraderie and accomplishment and they create a welcoming environment for new volunteers, patiently imparting their knowledge and experience on them.
Throughout the year, these hard-working helpers build homes while also acting as ambassadors for Habitat Las Vegas, spreading awareness about the organization’s mission and inspiring others to join the cause. They embody the true spirit of Habitat For Humanity Las Vegas – a commitment to not just building houses, but building hope.
Beyond the lumber and stucco, these homes represent a deeper impact to Las Vegas and a testament to the transformative power of dedicated volunteers like Jim and Jeff. These Red Shirt Volunteers are the heart that beats within every Habitat For Humanity Las Vegas build, and a constant reminder that hope truly wears red.
Thank you, Jim and Jeff, for your unwavering dedication and the profound impact you have on our community.
